Mindful Family Caregiving is a four-part online course that addresses the emotional complexities that come with caring for a loved one or family member. Being a Family Caregiver can bring unique rewards, and often poses unique challenges. If you are currently in this special role, or expect to be in it soon, these sessions are intended for you. You will gain more confidence, patience, and appreciation of yourself and those you care for.

Mary Doane

Mary Doane

As Supervising Instructor of Education Programs, Mary leads all Zen Caregiving Project’s (ZCP) course offerings. She is responsible for delivering teacher training, and she mentors emerging instructors and develops ZCP’s custom curricula.

Since starting with the organization as a volunteer bedside caregiver in 2005, Mary has also facilitated New Volunteer Trainings and served as Volunteer Program Coordinator.

Mary’s decades of mindfulness and compassion practices, along with personal experiences as a family caregiver, are the groundwaters of her teaching. Mary has also completed Buddhist Chaplaincy Training at the Sati Center for Buddhist Studies and was trained at Stanford University to teach Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT™). She has dual CCT Instructor certification from Stanford University School of Medicine, Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) and Compassion Institute (CI).

This live interactive series includes the following modules:

  • Cultivating Mindfulness for Engaged Care
  • Sustainable Compassion in Caregiving
  • Loss and its Influence on the Caregiving Experience
  • Maintaining Healthy Boundaries

Each two-hour session incorporates teaching, guided meditations, small group activities, and opportunities for group sharing. Handouts are provided for each session.

How much does it cost?

As a non-profit with the goal of improving the care experience, it is important to us that our pricing allows as many people as possible to attend.

  • Tuition: $150
  • Fixed-income Tuition: $120

How does it work?

  • The course will run weekly for four weeks, on Wednesdays in May.
  • Each session will be two hours long (8 hrs live teaching in total)
  • Class size is limited to a maximum of 20 people
  • Sessions will be conducted live via video conferencing (Zoom) by an experienced MCE Instructor.

Where?  
The session will be conducted through Zoom. Log-in information will be sent to participants by email prior to the session. (The Register button is on the right-hand side of this page)

These sessions will not be recorded and it’s important to try to attend all four sessions.

We will be using the Zoom web conferencing platform to run the forum. Due to security updates, you will be required to download their latest version of the platform. Click here to download the Zoom Client for Meetings. You will also find other updates to their platform for your cellphone and iPad. Please test out Zoom on your device before the session to ensure proper video and audio settings. For instructions, watch Zoom’s instructional video and then join a test meeting to confirm your computer settings. Be sure to speak into your build-in microphone or external headset to check the audio level.
